Works from two Suffolk County-based artists will be displayed to kick off Temple Beth Sholom’s 65th anniversary celebration.

The exhibit, called “Prayer – For the Healing of Body and Soul,” will open on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at the temple, located at 401 Roslyn Road in Roslyn Heights.

Featured in the exhibit are sculptor Lawrence Schloss, based in Centerport, and painter George Schulman, whose studio is in Huntington, both of whom are set to attend the opening.

“My sculptures of stone and wood speak to the inherent beauty and power of these materials,” said Schloss, whose work is created from locally-purchased stone and felled tree limbs and often reflects Judaic themes.

“The process I use to create my sculptures is deeply personal and often physically demanding,” he added. “Sculpting rock and wood into powerful aesthetic statements requires absolute devotion.”

Having also showcased his work at the Fine Arts Museum of Long Island in Port Washington and the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, among other galleries, Schulman said “to understand anything you must live with it, you must observe it, you must know all its content, its nature, its structure, its movement.”

“One of the most difficult things in the world is to look at things simply,” he said. “In the end it’s a lifelong process, so you need innocence, humility and courage.”
