Temple Sinai welcomes Kennedy author

The Island Now

This Nov. 22 will mark the 50 year anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Author Scott D. Reich asserts in his book, “The Power of Citizenship” that the most powerful element of Kennedy’s legacy is his emphasis on the theme of citizenship, and that a rededication to the values Kennedy promoted is critical to our country’s future.

Reich not only identifies modern challenges but also offers a tangible blueprint for how we can improve our public discourse, be good citizens, and lift our nation to new heights of greatness.

“Scott Reich’s book delivers a message of service and citizenship that is as essential today as it was when President Kennedy first asked what we could do for our country,” Congressman Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) said.

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley calls it “unique and compelling,” and historian David Eisenhower labels it, “the best and most interesting book written on the Kennedy presidency in decades.”

Part history and part call to action, “The Power of Citizenship” focuses on the very essence of what makes JFK so inspirational and timeless.

Reich is an attorney at the law firm Willkie Farr and Gallagher LLP, where he has been practicing law since 2008. He serves on the boards of several institutions, including the national board of the Union for Reform Judaism, the umbrella arm of the Reform Movement, the School for Language and Communication Development, a K-12 organization providing educational services to children with autism and language disorders, Temple Sinai of Roslyn, and the College Council of SUNY-Old Westbury.

Reich performs extensive pro bono work, which includes work for the Brooklyn Family Court, the New York Legal Assistance Group, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. In 2013, The Jewish Week featured him as one of their “36 Under 36.”

Reich earned a B.A. in history and communication with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for authoring the “Best Honors Thesis” at the Annenberg School for Communication. He went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was president of his class and received the prestigious “Class Award” for “the student who best exemplifies the spirit of Penn Law.”

Books will be available for sale and there will be a post-talk book signing.
