A quick look at what’s happening on Long Island this week for children and families.
American Airpower Museum
Thursdays through Sundays, 10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Today, no American aviation museum with a squadron of operational World War II aircraft has a more appropriate setting for its flight operations. Taxiing to the very runways and hangars that dispatched Thunderbolts to war, vintage aircraft recreate those turbulent years and allow the public to watch these planes in their natural environment – the air. Experience history and educate a new generation regarding the courage, valor and heroism of our nation’s citizen soldiers by presenting the operational aircraft and armor in the museum’s collection and its related displays, exhibits and programs. Adults $10; seniors (65+) and Veterans with proper ID $8; children 4-12 $5; children under 4 are free. Prices subject to change if special event taking place.

Maker Space: Tinker It Sundays
Sundays, 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Build, explore and create with tinkering activities at this free workshop.
Maker Space is a learning environment where children, teens, adults and families can tinker, design and create together. In these workshops participants use real tools to make real things and re-use everyday materials in exciting ways. From woodworking and plaster casting to electronics and 3D printing, we encourage experimentation, open-ended exploration, and believe that making mistakes is a great way to learn. These workshops are hands-on and can get messy, so when you come to a class, don’t wear your favorite shirt! Check website for weekly project.

Introduction to Orienteering
Saturday, April 16, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Orienteering is an international sport of navigating diverse, and often unfamiliar, terrain by map and compass. Two levels of instruction are offered. If you have never used a compass or need basic refresher instruction, attend our introductory program and practice your skills on a simple orienteering field course on the Preserve’s open lawn. Or try our more challenging course set up as a scavenger hunt, where you’ll gather facts to solve a puzzle. Bring your own compass, though we do have a limited quantity to lend. Recommended for ages 8 and up. $15 per car or $5 per car with Membership Pass, includes parking.
