Visit the American Merchant Marine Museum

Tuesdays-Thursdays, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The American Merchant Marine Museum preserves, displays and interprets historic artifacts and artwork related to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine, and the profession of seafaring. The Museum will educate and instill in midshipmen and the public an appreciation for the significant contributions made by the maritime services to the nation’s heritage, and in particular by USMMA graduates and personnel in peace and war. The current exhibit is “Ships Made America”, something every family member will enjoy.

Spring Family Freshwater Fishing Festival

Saturday, April 2, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Belmont Lake State Park will conduct the annual Spring Family Freshwater Fishing Festival.  Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with brown, brook and rainbow trout on top of the lake’s yellow perch population, providing a perfect opportunity to introduce families and friends to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing.  The freshwater license will be suspended temporarily. The festival is appropriate for people of all ages and activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. Children’s activities will include hands-on educational displays and a “Spring Fling” casting contest. The event will go on, rain or shine!  Free to public, vehicle use fee is in effect.

NY Cosmos Soccer 

Sunday, April 3, 6:00 p.m.

Watch the Cosmos take on the Ottawa Fury in an exciting first game of the regular season. The Cosmos are the 2015 league champions and they are ready for another great season. They play on Long Island in the 12 team North American Soccer League. Check website for ticket pricing and availability.

Spring Celebration!

Sunday, April 3, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Family fun to include square dancing, seed-plantings, live bird presentation and crafts.

Celebrate spring at Sands Point Preserve with a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family. Enjoy family square dancing with caller Jim Emory. Learn about birds of prey with live presentations from Volunteers for Wildlife. Plant a take-home pizza herb garden with the Long Island Sierra Club. Tap into your inner-artist in the much-awaited spring crafts room. And explore the great outdoors, weather permitting, for family nature hikes and scavenger hunts.

Admission for the Spring Celebration is $20 per car, or $10 with the membership pass.

The Science of Sleep Gardens Walk and Planting

Saturday, April 2, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Wake up to spring!  Brush out your bedhead and join a guided walk to learn how the Gardens awaken with the season. Newly sprouting plants and active animals will be highlighted followed by a planting of take-home seeds to stir life in your slumbered flowerbeds. All ages welcome!
