TOP Soccer tunes up for parents match

The Island Now

It was a cloudy Saturday morning June 9.  The Juniors and Intermediates combined their teams for play.  Sophocles Gianakis was on fire and scored four of the five Lightning’s goals.

The Lightning midfield of Christopher and Daniel Menendez, Nicolas Mininson and James Sarro kept the ball in play and fed the ball many times to Sophocles for the goals.

The fifth goal was scored by Josh Hom who came out of the goal and dribbled up the sidelines and put the ball into the back of the net. Jesse Sarro was excellent on defense.

The Red Alligators shared the scoring with Anthony Chung (2), and Desmond O’Callaghan, Brian Cisneros and Daniel Calabrese each scoring a goal.  Kudos to Daniel Calabrese for an excellent goaltending job and in stopping a breakaway.  Marcus Nicolson, Luke Stein and Brandon Cisneros were all in sync on defense.

The Coaches couldn’t keep up with the Seniors this Saturday.    David Glass and Andrea Matteo scored for the Seniors.  James Fahey had a breakaway minutes before the game ended but Coach Bletsch was able to stop James’ excellent shot.

Frank LaPinta, Justin Almonte, and Mary Glass were right-on in midfield.  Harrison Stein, Adam Strominger, Patrick Williams, Jefferson Yen (happy birthday) were strong in defense.

The athletes showed great team work and are confident they will beat the parents in next Saturday’s match.  Watch out parents, the players want to keep their 20 year undefeated record.
