Tornado Tigers claw 6-4 win over West Hempstead

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Wildcats Tornado Tigers girls soccer team won their fourth match in their last five with a 6-4 win over a talented team from West Hempstead.

The Tornado Tigers defense usually controls the game having allowed more than two goals only once in the last 20 matches but they had a tough day with the West Hempstead forwards giving up two goals in each half.

Down 2-0 just before half time and completely outplayed in the first half, Maggie Donnelly stole a goal kick, made a nice move around one player and fired a shot into the top of the goal from about 20 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1. New Hyde Park came out strong in the second half with Hannah Arkin scoring twice in the first three minutes of the half to take a 3-2 lead.

Arkin scored on a great kick from the left side after making a run just a few seconds into the half. A few minutes later Hannah was taken down in the box after a nice move and scored on the penalty kick.

West Hempstead tied it but Hannah scored again off a nice feed from Karina Gotz to give the Tornado Tigers the lead for good.

Natalie Kariotis put the NHP girls up 5-3 off a corner kick with a nice tap in from in front of the keeper in traffic. After West Hempstead cut the lead to 5-4 late in the game, Arkin scored again, beating the defender down the left side and blasting the ball into the far side of the net, giving Arkin four goals in one half of play.

Kim Keblish had a solid game for NHP at stopper, just missing a goal from 20 yards out. Milla Skugor, Maya Castro and Natalie Schlueck all played well at midfield for the Tornado Tigers in the win.
