The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Tornado Tigers moved into second place this weekend with an impressive 5-2 win against a talented team from Merrick.

Merrick scored in the first two minutes of play but Hannah Arkin scored a minute later to tie the game at one. Arkin received a pass at mid field, made a quick move around the defender and scorched one into the opposite side of the net. The Tornado Tigers moved ahead for good when Emma Blancher scored off a nice pass from Julia Gordon who made a nice play off a strong corner kick by Karina Gotz.

Natalia Kariotis gave New Hyde Park a two-goal advantage when she scored off a great cross by Arkin.

Merrick scored first in the second half to cut the lead to 3-2 but Gordon scored from 15 yards out on a strong kick that went off the keepers finger tips.

Arkin finished the scoring with another strong kick after beating the defense down the left side.

Debra Keller and Mariela Facibene played terrific in goal for the Tornado Tigers.

Kim Keblish was outstanding for New Hyde Park at Stopper. Maggie Donnelly, Natalie Schlueck and Maya Castro played terrific at mid field for NHP, spacing the field and controlling the ball. Forwards Kristen Granieri and Milla Skugor played strong games for the Tornado Tigers.
