Village of GN completes road program

The Village of Great Neck has completed its 2013 Roadway Program, part of a multi-year effort to repave all of the village’s roads that will continue at least through 2015.

“The latest developments for our Roadway Program have been a tremendous success.  We have been able to save hundreds of thousands of dollars and significantly expand the program,” said Village of Great Neck Mayor Ralph Kreitzman in a statement. “Our goal had been to repave all of our roads in about 30 years. We now hope the program will be completed in less than 20 years. This work is necessary because many of our roads are very old and some have never been repaved. It is critical that we make this investment in our future. With our AAA (highest) bond rating, we have been able to issue bonds to pay for our roadwork at very low interest rates, and we expect this year’s bond offering to again be at extremely low rates.”

The 2013 section of the project was completed ahead of schedule and below budget, and work has already begun on road sections originally scheduled for 2014 and 2015, according to a village press release.

The village hopes to complete the years-long repaving program within five years, according to Kreitzman. The project is funded by yearly bonds which Kreitzman said usually total between $1 million and $1.5 million annually.

The village saved money by using the Town of North Hempstead’s bid contract, allowing it to avoid the costs of preparing a bid, according to the release.

The streets paved this year were Baker Hill Road, Bromley Lane, Breuer Avenue, Carlin Place, Church Street, Crampton Avenue, Devonshire Lane, Hemsley Lane, North Gate Road, Patsy Place, Surrey Lane, and portions of Bellingham Lane, Bentley Road, Colgate Road, Croyden Avenue, Duxbury Road, Essex Road, Franklin Road, Hampshire Road, Hartley Road, Maple Street, Piccadilly Road, Plymouth Road, Radnor Road and Ramsey Road.
