Village of Great Neck to offer sidewalk repair fee waivers

Village of Great Neck trustees voted Tuesday to approve a “sidewalk repair sale” where the village would waive permit fees for residents seeking to repair broken sidewalks.

Village of Great Neck Mayor Pedram Bral said the village wanted to give an incentive to residents who want to repair their sidewalks.

“This way we are trying to encourage people to really get their sidewalks fixed,” Bral said. “There are many sidewalks that are tripping hazards and people with wheelchairs and strollers can’t really use those.”

Village Attorney Peter Bee said Department of Public Works Superintendent Louis Massaro would compile a list of vendors to complete sidewalk work, and make sure they have all necessary licenses and insurance.

Bral said the village would also waive deposit fees if a resident selects a vendor from the village’s “approved” list.

He also said he wanted to make the village more accessible for senior citizens.

“There have been multiple instances of the elderly falling,” Bral said.

Village Clerk-Treasurer Joe Gill said the village would still give out notices of violations during the time period of the offered fee waivers.

Also at the meeting, the board set a public hearing on April 5 to discuss the 2016-17 village budget.

Gill said the preliminary budget would be on the village’s website at some time before the April 5 hearing.
