Village road repairs meet timetable

The Village of New Hyde Park’s current $1.45 million road repair project is proceeding on schedule, according to Tom Gannon, village superintendent of the Department of Public Works.

Contractor Laser Industries Inc. was grinding down the surface of some village streets this week and laying down a first “binder” layer of material prior to a final layer of asphalt on 1st Avenue and other streets in the village, Gannon said on Monday. Gannon said crews were also working on South 10th Street and Herkomer Street.

“They’re all over the place,” Gannon said. “They’re definitely on schedule.”

The project, which is part of the village’s annual road repair effort, calls for repairs to 1 3/4 miles of road surfaces by Sept. 30, Gannon said. He said preliminary work on the road repairs, including repairs of curbs and regrading driveway aprons, started six weeks ago.

The village Board of Trustees unanimously voted to accept the low bid on the project from Ridge, N.Y.-based Laser on the recommendation of village engineering consultants Dvirka & Bartilucci in April.

The board had voted to authorize a bond of up to $2 million for the work prior to approving the bid from Laser.

Dvirka & Bartilucci had estimated a cost of $1.7 million to repair the 1 3/4 miles of roads to be repaved in 2014. Dvirka & Bartilucci is receiving $142,500 to design the project.

“We’re very excited about the movement forward of the road improvement project,” Village of New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro said at the time.

Lofaro has overseen the program of annual road repairs in the village, which is funded by bonds each year.

The roads on the village list of roads to be repaired include: 1st Avenue from South 8th Street to South 12th Street; 5th Avenue from South 8th Street to South 12th Street; Central Boulevard from Jericho Turnpike to Washington Avenue; sections of Herkomer Street; Lowell Avenue between Lakeville Road and South 12th Street; South 10th Street between Jericho Turnpike and 6th Avenue; Plaza Avenue between New Hyde Park Road and Herkomer Street; North 10th Street between Park Avenue and Lowell Avenue and the intersection of North 1st Street and Bryant Avenue.
