Viscardi aide arrested for ‘inappropriate’ acts

A teacher’s aide at the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson was arrested last Thursday night for endangering the welfare of a disabled person, Nassau County Police said.

Ivone Oliviera, 34, of 96 Barrister Road, Levittown, was arrested in Albertson on May 16 at 7:25 p.m. for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old male victim. detectives of the 3rd Precinct said

Oliviera was employed as a teachers aide assisting students who have various physical disabilities, police said.

In a statement released last Friday, Kim Brussel, a spokeswoman for the Henry Viscardi School, said the school “became aware of a serious allegation involving unacceptable conduct by a teaching assistant” involving a student at the school on May 14. 

Brussel said school officials immediately reported to law enforcement and state officials for investigation.

Beginning in January, 2013, detectives said Oliviera had inappropriate physical contact with the victim, such as hugging and kissing.  

Police said an investigation revealed Oliviera had also sent the victim text messages and photos of a sexual nature from her phone.

“Our school has been cooperating fully and completely with the investigation. The individual no longer works here,” Brussel said in the statement. “We know our school community will have concerns about the well-being of our students. Our first priority is to ensure that our students are always safe and protected while they are in our care – a priority that will not waiver”.

Oliviera had been employed at the Viscardi School, which is located at 201 I.U. Willets Road in Albertson, .

Oliviera is charged with endangering the welfare of a disabled person. She was arraigned on Friday, May 17 at 1st District Court in Hempstead.
