The Roslyn varsity baseball team was outscored by Wantagh 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon. An outstanding opposing pitching performance kept the Bulldogs off the score sheet.
Fourteen Bulldog hitters went down on strikes and could only muster two hits and six base runners in the game. Head coach Daniel Freeman stated that this was the best pitcher the team has faced all season.
“We didn’t have a hit past the pitcher’s mound till the fifth inning” said Freeman. “I thought their guy was very impressive. We were a little overmatched at times and it’s tough to score runs when you only get two hits.”
The Warriors started the scoring by putting up three runs in the top of the second. A bases loaded walk and a throwing error did the damage.
After that, Bulldogs senior starting pitcher Spencer Shores would settle down after the rough inning and pitched well until he was lifted in the top of the seventh inning. He took the loss and tossed six innings, allowing six hits, and three walks. He would strikeout three batters and gave up four earned runs.
“I thought Spencer stepped up and pitched great against the number 1 team in Nassau” said Freeman. “It was really a 3-0 game till the end. He always steps up against the big teams but they couldn’t get runs for him.”
The Warriors would cap off the scoring in the top of the seventh inning after they chased Shores with the first two men on base by plating five runs.
“I thought I pitched pretty well” said Shores. “I want to work faster, throw more strikes, and keep the pitch count low and go as deep as I can in my next outing.”
Freeman stressed the boys will focus on stringing together more hits, driving in runs with men in scoring position and making the routine plays for the next game.
