With winter upon us, the Whaling Museum & Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor has plenty of activities planned for children and families. The Museum is located at 301 Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor and is open to the general public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Special programs are:
Huntington Bay Dental’s “Toothpalooza” – Sunday, Feb. 8, from 12 to 3 p.m.
In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, explore the amazing world of teeth! Come touch whale teeth, hunt for shark teeth, see a whale tooth cavity, meet and greet with the Tooth Fairy, learn fun facts about teeth and the importance of oral hygiene and make a keepsake box for your baby teeth. All ages. $10/child.
Camp Open House and Groundhog Day Shadow Play – Sunday, Feb. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. Meet staff and see the wonderful programs the museum offers in the summer months for full and half day campers while celebrating Groundhog Day. Have fun with shadows and sea shapes. Create your own shadow puppets to keep and try them out in front of our shadow studio. All ages. Free.
FrozenFest! – Monday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Back by popular demand….Come in from the cold for a “Frozen” themed party. Meet Elsa, learn about arctic whales, create an Olaf snowman, get your face painted, make “Frozen” crafts in our workshop and enjoy free ice pops. All ages. $10/child.
Black History Month – Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. Commemorate Black History Month by exploring the contributions African-Americans made aboard whale ships in the 1800s. Touch a harpoon designed by Lewis Temple, an African-American inventor and create your own whale ship. Ages 5-12. $8/child. Adults regular admission.
Play Pod – Mondays in February (except President’s Day). New!!!! Enjoy open playtime, storytime, music and fun crafts about the ocean and nature. Changing theme each session. Ages 2 ½ – 5. Members free. $8 adults/tots pair.
Senior Day- Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m.. Create a Sailor’s Valentine – a beautiful mosaic based on the gifts sailors brought home from the Caribbean in the 1800’s. $5/Senior. Members free.
