Wheatley golfers win conference championship

The Island Now

The Wheatley School’s varsity golf team its first conference championship in 17 years, competing in the Nassau County Public High School Athletic Association.

This year’s team, lead by captain and senior Nicholas Del Mistro, senior John Gullotta, juniors Nicholas Kelapire, Alex Grieco, Eric Lizzul and Ryan Laverty, sophomore Graham Turk, freshman Ben Goldbaum and eighth grader Michael Braunstein, finished the season with a 7-1 record to accomplish the historic benchmark.

Competing in bad weather at Bethpage State Park on May 23, Braunstein, Laverty, Grieco, Lizzul, Del Mistro and Goldbaum competed in the Nassau County team and individual championship.  The team, qualified as conference champions, needed to finish in the top six to continue towards the county title. Unfortunately, the team finished in seventh place in the competition.

Eighth grader Braunstein shot a 76 which put him in fourth place after the first day. Michael continued to compete towards an individual County Championship, but didn’t qualify for the state championship.

Braunstein’s efforts earned him honorable mention all-county honors. Del Mistro, Laverty, Lizzul, Grieco and Goldbaum each earned all-conference honors for their outstanding performances throughout the season.

Coach Bernie Hintz guided the Wheatley golfers through their exemplary season.
