Winthrop’s cancer services named among nation’s best

The Island Now

Winthrop-University Hospital was recently named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s “100 Hospitals and Health Systems With Great Oncology Programs” list, which recognizes some of the nation’s most outstanding hospitals that are on the cutting edge of cancer treatment, prevention and research. Hospitals included in this list were selected based on clinical accolades, quality care and contributions to the field of oncology.

“Winthrop-University Hospital has long been a regional leader in clinical cancer care,” said John F. Collins, President & CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital. “Recognition by Becker’s Hospital Review further reflects our commitment to providing quality, patient-centered care coupled with the latest treatments and research.”

“Providing state-of-the-science clinical care and innovative therapies for patients is an essential component of the specialized care centers and programs at Winthrop’s Cancer Institute,” added Eva Chalas, MD, Director of Clinical Cancer Services, Vice-Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Winthrop,

In addition to earning prestigious recognition by Becker’s Hospital Review, Winthrop-University Hospital’s cancer care services were the first hematology/oncology team on Long Island to be recognized by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The QOPI® Certification, which Winthrop earned in 2012, is a three-year certification for outpatient hematology/oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality cancer care.

“This is another testament to our commitment to providing quality cancer care to every patient,” added Harry Staszewski, MD, Chief of the Division of Oncology/Hematology at Winthrop, whose leadership was instrumental in helping the Hospital’s cancer care team earn this certification.

Patients of Winthrop’s Cancer Institute can benefit from the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cancers. From stereotactic biopsy techniques for abnormalities to computer-guided systems that create a virtual “road map” during surgery, to the most advanced computerized treatment planning and delivery system for radiation therapy, Winthrop’s Cancer Institute is at the forefront of caring for cancer patients of all ages.

Winthrop has established itself as a world leader in use of CyberKnife radiosurgery for treating a broad range of tumors, including prostate, lung, head and neck, and most recently, breast cancer. The Hospital’s radiation oncology team is also investigating the potential use of CyberKnife radiosurgery for the treatment of ovarian cancers.

In addition, Winthrop’s new state-of-the-art Adult Oncology and Hematology Infusion Center is equipped with the latest technologies to support the newest treatment protocols, and the Hospital’s Breast Health Center – the first in Nassau County to hold certification by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers – provides unparalleled, comprehensive breast care to all patients.

Diagnosing and treating the range of cancers and blood disorders in children is the focus of specialists in Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids – the largest outpatient facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders in Nassau County. Staffed by pediatric hematologists/oncologists with decades of experience, the Center is a unique regional resource that caters to children’s medical needs as well as psychosocial needs. It is also the County’s only member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a prestigious international consortium of collaborating hospitals recognized as leaders in the treatment of childhood cancers.

Lastly, Winthrop’s Cancer Navigator Program offers individualized assistance to patients, families and caregivers, helping them move seamlessly through the many diagnostic tests, procedures, physician visits and treatments they face after learning they have cancer. In addition to assisting patients from pre-diagnosis through all phases of the cancer experience, Winthrop’s Cancer Navigators also provide ongoing emotional support when it’s most needed.
