WP beautification efforts worthwhile

The Island Now

My compliments to the citizens responsible for the interesting statue in front of the Williston Park Fire House ( “Every Day a Hero” by Colette Pitcher and sponsored by the Rotary International).

Williston Park may not be Rome, Paris or Florence but it’s good to see that we’re trying to get some beauty into our village.

We now have brick sidewalks, nice lampposts, some attractive benches, flowers down Hillside Avenue and a nice looking park next to the train station.  I also noticed that Williston Park Town Diner installed a waterfall and garden in front of their building. They didn’t have to do that but I’m glad they did.

And lest someone think that all these things are foolish expenditures just ask former mayor of New York Mayor (Rudy) Giuliani what he thinks. He turned around the crime rate in Manhattan by simply focusing on cleaning up the graffiti and making sure the streets looked well kept.

Statistics have shown that criminals become more law abiding and cautious when they walk through a place that looks loved and tended.

I feel that we all yearn for our towns to be filled with beauty and charm.  A beautiful town is good for the soul, the spirit and even the crime rate.

Congrats to those who put their blood sweat and tears into making our town a prettier place to walk through.  And congrats to the fire house for consigning a nice piece of art to make my walk about town more pleasant. It is money well spent.
