The Williston Park Fire Department maintained local tradition by celebrating Independence Day with a colorful and tuneful parade in the morning of July 4th.
The East Williston Fire Department, Albertson Hook and Ladder Engine & Hose Co. No. 1, Maritime Band, Albertson VFW Post 5253, American Legion Post 144 in Williston Park and Women’s Auxiliary, and Knights of Columbus Corpus Christi Council #2502 in Mineola joined the Williston Park volunteer firefighters to honor the the country’s 236th birthday.
Filling Williston Park with rumbling drums, soaring bagpipes and various brass instruments, the parade elicited a spirit of patriotism as local residents stood along the line of march cheering and waving their American flags.
Residents stood along the line of march down Hillside Avenue and Willis Avenue, cheering, waving flags and snapping picture of the parade that began at 9:30 a.m. and concluded at 10:30 a.m. with a brief ceremony in front of the Williston Park Firehouse.
Heading down Hillside Avenue from Broad Street, the parade turned down Park Avenue, Center Street and finally Willis Avenue towards the firehouse.
“This is a long lasting tradition in our 85 year history, and we’re all here to just keep that going,” said Williston Park Fire Department Chief George Jaroncyk. “People don’t celebrate like this anymore, it’s important
that we do what we can do it carries on.”
Ending at the East Williston Fire Department in front of their newly donated firefighter statue this past Memorial Day, a prayer and memorial service was offered by the East Williston Fire Department Chaplin, Deacon Joe Connolley. “We ask you to bless everyone here in this country. Those who defend it, protect it and are supporting it,” Connolley said.
Following the memorial service, the Williston Park firefighters served up hot dogs and cold drinks.
Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar brought his two grandchildren to the parade with him.
“I’m proud of the fire department and everything they do for us. They put on a wonderful parade and bring the community together,” Ehrbar said.
Williston Park trustees Michael Uttaro and Kevin Rynne were also in attendance.
“It’s a good day to celebrate our nations independence. We’re here with our friends and family, this is the best way to do it,” Uttaro said.
