Our Views: A better approach to school safety

The Island Now

Following the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, the NRA offered to place and train armed guards in every school in America. Some gun nuts have even suggested that the teachers should be packing.

We have already made it clear how strongly we disagree. But as the children returned to their classes last week, the schools in Nassau County took a far better approach to the issue of public safety.

In the East Williston school district Superintendent Elaine Kanas said school administrators were taking part in workshops run by the Nassau County Police Department and Homeland Security. The schools conducted security audits of safety procedures and reviewed the Project Save procedures created nearly a decade ago.

The entire nation is stunned by what happened in Connecticut but this reasoned approach to school safety is far superior to the hysteria promoted by the NRA.
