Readers Write: A guide to new street light in the Village of Great Neck

The Island Now

We have a new traffic light on Middle Neck Road at the corner of Brokaw Lane, thanks to the efforts of our Nassau County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum and her predecessor, Judi Bosworth, our Great Neck public school and PTSA and the Village.

The light is a welcome safety feature, but pedestrians must know how to use it to afford maximum safety.

It is important that pedestrians cross at the crosswalk and press the button on the pole on the sidewalk beside the crosswalk, and then wait for the pedestrian light (hand) to turn white from red.  That allows extra time for pedestrians to cross.

Note that this light, and many others, may not change unless the pedestrian button is pressed.  However, each Friday evening through Saturday evening, the light will change automatically even if the pedestrian button is not pressed.

So, please, for your safety:

• Cross only at crosswalks and hold a hand of children.

• Press the pedestrian crossing button.

• Wait for the pedestrian light (hand) to turn white.

• Look both ways and never assume an oncoming vehicle will stop.
