Readers Write: Apologies to a letter-writer for failed attempt at satire

The Island Now

Dear Dr. Marcus,

I hope that you will accept my most humble and profound apology for the letter I sent to the Courier on May 2. It was a clumsy attempt at satire, and I did not remember in time, in my haste, that there is an actual Dr. Marcus and that you have occasionally written to the newspaper on medical subjects. My intention was to emphasize the dyslexia of a certain Dr. M., who makes no attempt to correct frequent errors, despite many comments from readers other than myself.

I should also apologize for what could be construed as insensitivity to his problem, if that is what it is, and do so now. In my defense, a friend called to tell me how clever I was to use the wrong name as well as noting his misspelling of my name.

I certainly knew that you are a physician but made a distinction, perhaps incorrect, in stating that he was a dentist. When I speak to dentists, they are embarrassed by perhaps being connected to a certain dentist for reasons I leave to your imagination.

Another dyslexic in the same issue of the paper? On what page? I’ll have to check the May 2nd issue.
