[Nassau] County Executive Ed Mangano recently came out in defense of the county¹s assessment system, arguing that homeowners should have a right to challenge their assessments. That¹s not the issue here. 

The issue is that so many people need to challenge their assessments because the system is so broken!

Eighty-five percent of the county¹s tax refunds go to commercial properties, but 75 percent of the refunds are paid by residential taxation. 

This means that the county¹s big commercial developers are being subsidized by our homeowners, leaving us all with higher tax bills every fall.

Despite what Mangano has said, this is a county issue: We need to overhaul our county assessment system so that we get it right the first time. 

We need to redesign the assessment process to make sure our houses are valued fairly, and we need to bring in proven professionals who can properly
