Reader’s Write: Backs turned on Academy Gardens tenants

The Island Now

At the beginning of Academy Gardens, long-drawn battle, there was a promise from the developers, that the residents would be allowed to return once the building was ready for occupancy.

We didn’t believe them and we were right. They figured their way out of that one.

In their latest attempt, a letter offering dinner at a Queens restaurant to discuss their fate. Why not at their office or a room at the Great Neck House?

Also, why wasn’t the letter signed? They offered money, but the residents refused. It shows that money isn’t everything.

They would rather after a day at work, turn their key and say. “I am home!”

Over history, almost all of the developers or their families have come from a background where they were forced out of their countries and torn from their homes. So, they above all should understand. Great Neck has a name, for the best schools, best parks, best libraries, the best of everything, but sadly, only for people of means.

But, it doesn’t have to be, lets live in a community where people of all means can learn from each other. We have people who live in deplorable conditions, especially in the Old Village.

We have people living in basement rooms and closets.

Academy Gardens is the only affordable housing left in our village, but it is to be demolished for greed. No one should be without a roof over their head.

To Mr. Bloom, I have a lot of respect for you as an accomplished lawyer, so, I am sadden that you would continue to handle King’s Point Gate.

Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. It seems our village is intent of wiping out the middle class.

Shame on You!

If our residents are put out on the street, we can provide tents and set up a “tent city” and bring shame on this “best of everything community, Great Neck”.
