Street fair attendance low: Beckerman

A combination of rain and a competing street fair in Long Beach resulted in lower-than-expected attendance at the 36th annual Village of Great Neck Street Fair on Sunday, Village of Great Neck Deputy Mayor Mitchell said.

But Beckerman, the fair’s director, said he still considers the event a success for the village.

“Did we have as many vendors as we liked? No,” Beckerman said. “But the vendors I did speak to did very, very well and were talking about coming back next year.”

Beckerman said a lower-than-expected number of vendors came out to the event, due to a two-day street fair in Long Beach.

“It was a little smaller than I would have liked it to be,” Beckerman said.

Beckerman said a brief spell of rain between 3:45 to 4 p.m. caused attendance at the fair to be lower than it has in years past.

“Other than that it was a beautiful day,” he said. “The vendors did very well and the public enjoyed it.”

The fair was held on Middle Neck Road between Fairview Avenue and Hicks Lane. Vendors at the fair sold jewelry, clothes and other crafts, as well as food.

Visitors also got to enjoy a petting zoo and free pony rides on the Village Green. A rock climbing wall was also donated by the Great Neck Park District.

“That was really cool,” Beckerman said.

Proceeds from the fair will go to the beautification of Middle Neck Road, he said.

“It should have a specific purpose,” he said. “It shouldn’t just go into the village’s general fund.”

Beckerman said the village is looking to replace the village banners along Middle Neck Road with this year’s proceeds.

The planning for next year’s fair has already started, Beckerman said.

“The planning starts the day after the fair ends,” he said.
