Readers Write: Columnist offers sound response to gun violence

The Island Now

Karen Rubin’s comprehensive article regarding President Obama’s Executive Action proposal was right on target on an incomprehensible subject.

The article was comprehensive because it clearly described many of the factors associated with gun possession.

The incomprehensibility was emphasized because our nation has a plethora of guns. More important, it stressed President Obama’s courage to speak to the nation to save lives not destroy them.

As a gun-safety advocate and one who has been a victim, (our daughter was murdered seven years ago) I wished that these actions would have been proposed years ago, but I am heartened that the president finally used his executive initiative,

It is devastating to note that which Ms. Rubin described and stressed so accurately in the president’s address is that gun violence is legislatively and politically charged in addition to being under the inordinate control of the NRA, their overzealous claims to their gun rights and twisted interpretation of the Second Amendment.

In reality we are talking about the loss of human lives which was the point of the President’s message and was reiterated by Ms. Rubin.

Ms. Rubin’s article clearly emphasizes President Obama’s intent…to save lives with his heartfelt legislative order that is so vitally needed.

It can be concluded that a human issue results in a political and legislative one…which as Ms. Rubin again emphasizes was the purpose of the president’s executive orders which advances us one step closer to fulfilling common sense rules for enforcing existing laws.

Other issues regarding gun violence were addressed and mentioned in Ms. Rubin’s article were how mental illness has been a contributing factor.

But gun safety is the key word, the federal government’s role to advance research for gun safety, expanded background checks and banning assault weapons.

The president’s initiative is a step in the right direction, not only because he thought it but for his speaking out on no uncertain terms what we as a nation must strive for. I’m grateful for his articulating what is right and just and for Ms. Rubin’s insightful article.
