From the desk of Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano: County parks offer full fall schedule

The Island Now

I am so very proud of our parks system and all we have to offer in our great county.  This fall, we have an action-packed lineup of quality entertainment and the best part is that most events are free for Nassau County residents!

My efforts to create tourism, coupled with the immense support from local business sponsors, makes it possible to bring top-notch events like the TD fireworks spectacular to you at no charge.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, come on down to Chelsea Mansion for a concert by the Long Island Conservatory of Music.  Take in the beautiful landscape that affords Chelsea Mansion its sense of elegance and charm while listening to music ranging from jazz to classical.  Concertgoers are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy this outdoor show.

Saturday, Sept. 8, is a jam-packed day.  Start the day at Old Bethpage Village Restoration for the Annual Alzheimer’s Walk which begins at 8:30 a.m. That night, beginning at 7:30p.m., head on down to Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park for Pakistani-American Festival Night.

This year marks the 11th Anniversary of the Sept. 11th, 2001 attack on America.  On Thursday, September 6, at 7 p.m. we will hosti a Sunset Candlelight and Remembrance Ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in Eisenhower Park, near Parking Field 6.  I encourage everyone to join us as we read the names of Nassau County residents who lost their lives in the attacks.

Do you like baseball?  If you do then on Sept. 8th, 9 and 16 Long Island Vintage Baseball Clubs turn out to play 19th century rules baseball in the uniforms, style and rules of the 1860s and 1880s.  This fun event takes place at Old Bethpage Village Restoration at various times so call 572-8401 for more information.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, stop by Muttontown Preserve and experience Nassau County’s largest nature preserve and one of its most beautiful settings.  The walks are $5 and begin at 8:30 a.m. from the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve.

This fall my bi-weekly column will alert you to our upcoming events. So get your lawn chair ready and mark your calendar for some good old fashion park entertainment.

Please visit www.nassaucountyny.gov/Parks for more information on any of our events.

Thank you and enjoy your parks system.
