Readers Write: Don’t overreact to accidents on Roslyn Road

The Island Now

There have been all of these articles and activity about changing Roslyn Road. Or should I say Wrecking WRoslyn Road.

The reason why is for incidents that happened: October 2013, 2 1/2 years ago, March 2014 and April 2014, each 1 1/2 year ago and one at Powerhouse Road.

Since that time I have known of no more.

Things do seem to come in packets for reasons that are not understood.

A while back one morning 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., I counted 1,500 vehicles going under the Roslyn Road underpass of the LIRR in both directions.

Not to go into it here but I consider that 10 million vehicles move on Roslyn Road in a year. Maybe many more.

Of the four incidents mentioned, two had to have been due to inebriation of the drivers. Not one word was mentioned about the cause of the other two incidents.

What is for certain is that Roslyn Road didn’t ‘done’ it.

One can only wonder considering the way it is playing out if it is a con game to make money which might result in the destruction of one of our major thoroughfares.

I have to say it as I see it. Besides, there are recurring accidents on our parkways and expressway all the time.

Now! And for a long time, if one travels eastbound on the Northern Parkway there is an exit for Glen Cove Road.

One can turn right onto a merge lane to go south. There is the light which when green allows a left turn to go north on Glen Cove Road and go west or east on Jericho.

Now! When exiting the Northern Parkway westbound and reaching Glen Cove Road, one may not go south. Period!

If one wants to go left on Jericho it is necessary to “jackrabbit” across two northbound lanes to reach the left turn lane.

Generally, when this becomes possible the left turn lane is already full and one is stopped in the inner northbound lane until a driver courteously let’s one squeeze in when the left turn lane begins to move. Until then, one hinders northbound traffic.

The left turn arrow does not hold long enough for the great bulk of traffic turning left to clear the lane.

There are many reasons why a motorist would want and need to go south on Glen Cove Road. All that is needed is another traffic light.

I am here searching for the proper name to describe the dumb dumbs that set up this intersection and left it as it is.

Perhaps they were appointed Nassau County style.

Perhaps after there has been an accident they will say: “We have to do a study.” That expression has become so trite as to make one sick.

There was a time when during the Spring and Summer the weeds would grow so high that one would have to be way out in The Glen Cove Road northbound lane to see if it was clear.

I called them once and was told: That’s not our responsibility, it’s a state or county road, whichever. Later someone finally cut the weeds.

Again, I have to say it as I see it, and know it too.
