Reader’s Write: Failed opera hurt Playhouse option

The Island Now

I was born and raised in live in Great Neck all my life. Our family real estate office, Gutterman Real Estate, has been here over 75 years.

I did sell the Playhouse Movie Theatre. United Artists had it for sale. According to Mrs. Gutterman’s records (my mother) it was sold April 21, 1982

The buyer asked me what they could do with it. In the contract of sale it stipulated that the Playhouse could not be used for a movie theatre!

United Artists also owned the Squire movie theatre. I told the buyers to use it for real Broadway shows. The theatre had the space and there was good parking.

Unfortunately, the first production was a second-rate performance of the opera “Carmen,” which did not turn out very well and to my knowledge was the only show performed there.
