From the desk of Mayor Paul Ehrbar: From celebration to sober reflection

The Island Now

On Friday October 12th, I  began my day at Crest Hollow Country Club with members of the Chamber of the Willistons.

Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce held their annual countywide breakfast. As reported last week Peter Masterson of State Farm was honored as a Businessman of the Year.

I was there to represent our Village of Williston Park. It was an honor to be there to represent the village as Peter  received this well deserved  award. The rest of the day was uneventful as I spend the day at Village Hall.

However, the evening was quite different.

I attended the wake of Vincent LaSala to honor a man who had spent much of his adult life giving to those in the community. Vinnie served on the Herricks School Board  for 18 years, serving the students of the Herricks School District . His loss is not only a loss for his family but also for the Williston Park/ Herricks Community.

On Oct. 31, Halloween, the Annual Rag a Muffin Parade sponsored by the Kiwanis, will be taking place. All those who wish to participate should meet at the American Legion parking lot  on Willis Ave at 6:15 PM.

The parade should begin at 6:30 with the march going south on Willis Ave to Charles Street. Then, the parade route goes left on Charles Street proceeding  to Park Ave where the route will then head south to Lafayette Street . The parade group will proceed  on Lafayette and terminate at Village Hall. The Williston Park Fire Department will lead the costumed participants while our own Auxiliary Police will assist the 3rd Precinct with traffic control.

As part of the event the Recreation Committee will once again having a pumpkin carving /decorating contest. Contestants are asked to drop off their entries  at 6:00 p.m. in front of Village Hall.

Junior Girl Scout Troop 1182 and Daisy Troop 1734 will be collecting food for ST. Aidans food pantry. Those wishing to donate can bring items to Village Hall  beginning at 6:00 p.m.

It will be important for children and most especially parents take precautions to ensure the safety of those who will be out on Halloween. Carry flashlights, wear reflective clothing, cross at the corner, not in the middle of the block, use common sense and be alert at all times for the safety of all. Drivers :slow down, stop at stop signs and be aware of those out enjoying the evening.

A special thanks goes out to Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell for once again hosting the flu shot program for seniors.

Bill Lorusso was able to secure the vaccinations while the American Legion hosted the event. Thanks to all those who volunteered to help make this event successful.
