Readers Write: GN library staff earn my referendum vote

The Island Now

I’ve lived in Great Neck for 60 years. I took my children to the old Arrandale Library for their first cards and watched the “new” library taking shape. Through all these years I’ve appreciated the many services the library supplies, and the helpfulness and interest of the library staff. This past Sunday I was even more grateful.

I was downstairs in the audio department when suddenly the lights went out. I managed to make my way to the glass doors but they were locked. Thankfully the lights were on in the hallway.

At that point I realized the library closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays, so I started banging on the doors and shouting. Luckily, some departing staff came along and said they would alert someone upstairs. It seemed like hours to me but in just a few minutes Irina Zionts and Justin Crossfox came along and I explained my predicament.

I said I was sure help would come and that they should go home, but they insisted on staying with me until I was freed.

All my anxiety and feeling of oncoming hysteria disappeared.

Jose Rodrigous came and tried all the keys he had. None worked. I don’t remember how many times he went for more keys, but to no avail.

Meanwhile Irina and Justin talked to me, suggested I look in various places for a key and kept me very calm.

Finally they called the man they knew had a key. He came from his home and I was free. Irina led me to the only exit still open.

The whole episode took a bit over an hour and Irina and Justin stood outside that door making me feel safe and at ease.

It was a true example of above and beyond the call of duty.

I’m voting Yes on the referendum in November. I intended to all along, but now I know they really do need to renovate – especially the loud speaker system.
