Our Views: Good luck in new job, Mr. Kaiman

The Island Now

After 10 years of service as supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead, Jon Kaiman will be leaving office on Sept. 23 to assume his new responsibility to oversee Long Island’s ongoing effort to recover from Hurricane Sandy.

Since taking office, Kaiman has been the face of North Hempstead. He was there at every event and was a tireless advocate for the people he represented. His last official act as town supervisor will be the presentation of the town’s 2014 tentative budget.

He was appointed to this position by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He now faces a very important and difficult task. The storm recovery team put together by Cuomo is still in the process of defining what his new duties will be. Nearly a year after the storm, much needs to be done.

Kaiman told us he has mixed feelings about leaving. We’re not surprised.

“It’s bittersweet,” he said. “I’m looking forward to my new responsibilities. It’s been 10 years.

It’s time to move on and try to challenge myself in different ways. And yet 10 years here has been a real extraordinary time with real impact. We’ve done some great things. We changed the Town of North Hempstead for the better.”

That’s true.

We thank Kaiman for all that he has done for North Hempstead and we wish him great success in helping Long Island rebuild. The governor has made a wise choice.

Whoever replaces him will have big shoes to fill.
