Readers Write: GOP backs failed European economics

The Island Now

Larry Penner, in his weekly column, berates Rep Israel, and his voting consistently on the Democratic line.

It seems to me that the Republicans have been even more rigid, with not one breaking party ranks in the last four years.

He also needs some facts.

Unemployment, while still too high, has dropped from over 8 to 7.6 percent, the stock market has boomed to a record level, productivity, housing and consumer confidence are all rising.

If this continues, the deficit will come down.

Perhaps he prefers the Republican approach, which is akin to that of Europe, where unemployment is 25 percent, recession is widespread, and even the powerful Germany is teetering.

But, at the end he says he wants “another alternative.”

If the Republicans are the alternative, than who are the another alternative? Is he after forming a third party?

Then to turn to your other permanent correspondent, Dr. Stephen Morris, who spends much time and space reminiscing.

One would think that, in his much vaunted dentistry course, he would have had to do some anatomy.

He says that “we didn’t know a sole.”

I would enlighten him; it’s right there, under his foot. It is also a delectable fish.

I do not understand his concern about costs and rules in New York City schools; our concern should be local.

Our costs appear to be catching up to them, though, fortunately, we do not have their silly rules.
