Reader’s Write: Great Neck school board let veterans down

The Island Now

I was disappointed at the apparent shallowness of the Great Neck Board of Education’s response to the school tax relief for veterans. Sadly the number of World War II, Korean War is decreasing at an accelerating rate and probably for Viet Nam veterans as well.

Veterans are not looking for complete exemption or even the 15 percent and 25 percent exemptions the state of New York recommended. It might be appropriate to initially limit relief that would be equivalent to transferring at most some single-digit percent of the school budget to the non-veterans base of the school budget.

I would suggest that the Board of Education put a pencil to what might be doable, looking at the number of eligible veterans, now the number is diminishing and what the effect would be wit5h varying degrees of relief. Why wait until next year; veterans shouldn’t have to wait!
