Readers Write: Greatest joy comes from helping others

The Island Now

In reference to Mr. Bedell’s letter (“Don’t limit helping the needy to one time a year)”, I hardily agree for two reasons.

As a volunteer for 13 years at The Interfaith Nutrition Network, I have come to realize that the greatest joy comes from helping others.

Second, each of us has a duty to make the world a little better than we found it, by acts of kindness and compassion, knowing full well that “There but for the grace of God, go I.”

If each of us pitches in, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.

The sages remind us that “Whoever saves a single life…is as if he or she saves an entire world.”

And Anne Frank said it better than I ever could: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
