Our Views: Immigration reform, at last

The Island Now

There is no accurate estimate of how many undocumented aliens are living on Long Island. It’s safe to say that there are thousands of families living in the shadows.

Finally a bipartisan group of United States senators has agreed on the framework of plan to overhaul the nation’s immigration system. The “illegals” will be given the opportunity to take the first step toward citizenship without fear of deportation.

This makes sense on every level. U.S. Sen. John McCain (D-Arizona) estimated that there are as many 11 million undocumented aliens living in this country. Even if it tried, Homeland Security could never find, let alone deport, even a small fraction of them.

The “illegals” are a major financial burden on local government.

But most important, this is a humane solution.

The plan is contingent upon a greater effort to close off the border with Mexico.

Everyone with a heart – even the Tea Party – should welcome this historic development.
