Readers Write: Is Village of GN really serious about recycling?

The Island Now

I am a stickler for recycling, to a fault. On one weekend, my son and I went over our out-dated books and other stuff, and separated them meticulously into paper, plastic, and metal, to fill three 32-gallon containers. On Tuesday evening, with our gardener’s help, I moved them to the curbside for recycling pick up the next day.

They were not picked up. I do not know whether the truck came or did not. I called the Village of Great Neck office to report a missed sanitation pick up. Nothing happened.

On Thursday, I was afraid that I may get a summons, I called the village three times. Thinking that the staff member concerned may be on vacation, I talked to the secretary, and asked to be connected to the right person.

I was connected to the same recording which kept on playing the WCBS traffic reports.

Of course, nothing happened.

The containers were too heavy for me to move back into my garage.

On Friday morning, I saw to my horror, that the regular garbage truck was picking up the recyclable material.

Hours of my work was going into the trash, together with a few trees.

Are we serious about the recycling program in Great Neck?
