Our Views: Let there be lights

The Island Now

Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of light marking the triumph of light over darkness, begins on Dec. 8. We wish our Jewish readers and their families a joyous celebration of a holiday that is especially meaningful this year.

Nassau County has witnessed the triumph of light over darkness both literally and, more importantly, in the triumph of the human spirit as the community has come together to rebuild after Hurricane Sandy.

At the same time the lights of the Christmas season have gone on everywhere you look. It is a joyous season for all and it is just what we need.

In this issue you will find a calendar of the many ways that the county is celebrating the holiday season including Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanza, including a Menorah lighting, a Christmas tree lighting, a county-run Mail Your letter to Santa Claus. Schools and other organizations will be holding holiday concerts. And Old Bethpage Village, a Nassau County treasure, will hold its annual candlelight evenings.

We can imagine that are some humbugs who will complain that the county shouldn’t be celebrating these holidays.

With all due respect, we disagree. Whatever you celebrate and even if, sadly, you celebrate nothing, we say: Let there be lights!
