Reader’s Write: Letting priests marry would reduce sex abuse problem

The Island Now

Pope Francis directed the Vatican on Friday, April 5, to act decisively on clergy sex abuse cases and punish pedophile priests, saying the Catholic Church’s “credibility” was on the line.

Such an announcement was quickly dismissed by some victims’ advocates as just more talk, while others lobbying for reform in the church held out hope the new pontiff might challenge the Vatican’s bureaucratic culture seen as fostering a cover-up mentality.

It is noted that this issue of sexual abuse among Catholic priests has been a problem for long time. Hope something can be done about it by the new pontiff.

Like Protestants, pastors should get married.

Generally speaking, Protestants do not ordain single pastors unless they are missionaries. Even then they are urged to get married as soon as possible.

Celibacy does not make anybody holier. It is only recommended for those who cannot live a settled down life just like St. Paul.
