The Island Now

By now, everyone on Long Island has heard of the unimaginable crime committed by a local contractor who illegally dumped 32,000 tons ( yes, tons!) of construction debris in Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood.

Prosecuting these criminals is obvious. Cleaning up the asbestos is an immediate necessity. But how is the town of Islip going to pay for the $6 million cleanup? They will follow the example of so many of our other municipalities. There are no contingency plans anywhere in their budget and no “saving for a rainy day. There are never surpluses to draw from and no “big brother” to go to. The county ? The state? They are both looking for more money themselves.

The solution?  Islip will just go further into debt, borrow the$ 6 million and let the next generation of taxpayers foot the bill. It will be just another Long Island bond issues and the resulting higher taxes to pay the principle and the interest.

Did you hear what happened in the high-taxed, regulation-ridden, business-unfriendly, state of California?

Remember when it was the home of the big three Japanese automakers? Well, not anymore.

In 2005, Nissan moved to Tennessee!  Honda relocated to Ohio! And now, Toyota announced that, after 50 years in Los Angeles, they are moving their entire North American operations to Plano, Texas!.

Got that? Leaving L.A. for Plano Texas?  All 4000 workers ! And that even includes Toyota’s New York-based financial group, who will move right along with them.

But perhaps more important was why businesses are moving to Texas, Tennessee and Ohio. Take a guess?

So many North Shore elitists always ridicule those “hicks”. But those “red necks” figured out that if they lower their taxes and have real business friendly policies, businesses and all their permanent, high paying jobs, will “come on down, ya-all.” Da!

Really? What say you now, Congressmen Steve Israel and Tim Bishop? You both never even considered that approach, did you ?

Liberal California voters were philosophically compelled to elect Gov. Jerry Brown. After all, he was one in a long line of big spending, high taxing, corporation-hating politicians that liberals just adore.

Remember when they made fun of those “country bumpkins,” like Gov Rick Perry of Texas, John Kasich of Ohio and Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker.

All these guys have done is to lower their state taxes, introduce business friendly policies, and watch as their unemployment rate came down as companies and their workers were attracted to their states.

They get results and don’t always worry about being revered by the New York Times. It’s results that count to those millions of long-term unemployed, not saving the spotted owl or taxing the rich again. I’ll bet no North Shore progressive watches Duck Dynasty .

Which brings me to the liberal “issue de jour.” It seems like every Democrat around here is jumping for joy now that Congressmen Steve Israel endorsed raising the minimum wage to $10.10.

How wonderful. How altruistic. How can we say no to such a philanthropic cause? Everyone deserves a living wage. Right ?

Even if the facts prove otherwise.

Well, guess what? That’s exactly what happened. The Congressional Budget Office, that impartial, non-political government agency disproved Congressman Israel’s theory. It seems that their latest report stated that if the minimum wage were increased to $10.10 for the 16.5 million low income workers. (Ready for this one ?)

1 – 500,000 jobs would be lost. You heard me, That’s 500,000.

and

2 – wages for the low-wage workers who would still be employed, would actually decrease!

Isn’t that what conservatives have been saying for years?

Nassau Country Democrats are not paying attention either. They have introduced a bill in the Nassau Country Legislature that also sounds so wonderful.

I know that all you liberals will go into anaphylactic shock when I say this. But, I will say it anyway.

I am against your bill which would require all private sector businesses with 25 or more workers, to provide at least five paid sick-days a year for all their employees. Even part time workers.

This “feel-good”, tax the rich idea, is just another reason for businesses not to hire extra workers.

Why do Democrats always feel that paying more to workers is preferred even if it results in other workers losing their jobs or being paid less.

We have come full circle. Even some liberals like Gov. Cuomo are joining our cause. His tax-free zones, and business incentives may be too little, too late, but seem to be working anyway.

Please don’t tell any Great Neck Democrat about the governor’s “corporate welfare” or he might lose the endorsement of the ultra left wing Working Family party or scandal ridden Independence Party.

We wouldn’t want to antagonize these folks, would we?
