Warschawsky: Manhasset’s Tutor Doctor

The Island Now

A Manhasset resident since 1997 with strong ties and a vested interest in this community, Michael Warshawsky opened Tutor Doctor in February 2011. Since his target market is families, he felt it was natural to start his in-home tutoring business in Manhasset and neighboring communities. He said, “It is a pleasure doing business in my backyard after commuting to a corporate job in Manhattan for 27 years.”

Stating that Tutor Doctor is a fast-growing global franchise company with branches throughout the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Mexico, Warshawsky adds that he and his family are proud to own the franchise serving Manhasset and surrounding areas. He and his wife Jill run most aspects of the business together, including marketing and tutor recruitment/matching. Michael conducts in-home consultations and handles the accounting and administrative duties.

According to Warshawsky, Tutor Doctor provides affordable one-on-one customized in-home tutoring to students of all ages (kindergarten through college and adults) and all learning abilities. The education program is built on the school’s curriculum and individual’s specific needs. It’s not a “cookie cutter” program. He said, “Our vast roster of tutors are seasoned teachers from elementary through college level, precisely matched to students based on the tutor’s teaching level, subject expertise, the specific needs of the student, his/her personality and learning style.”

Warshawsky said he starts with a free in-home consultation and assessment, adding that Tutor Doctor of Nassau County has never met a student it could not help. He believes that service is paramount and said that Tutor Doctor’s scheduling (days/times/length of sessions) is flexible around a student’s busy life. Warshawsky said that tutoring hours purchased in an enrollment never expire and can be used for any subject by any family member.

The tutor roster has grown to more than 100 experienced, specialized instructors, according to Warshawsky, who said, “We have become a primary source for tutoring in low-demand and under-served subjects, including Latin, Greek, Arabic and Chinese, professional editing, New Testament literature, art history, personal investing, public speaking, test preparation for ASVAB and U.S. Citizenship exams, and college counseling.” He added that Tutor Doctor continues to provide one-on-one tutoring for all mainstream subjects and all test preparation.

Tutor Doctor’s mission, according to Warshawsky, is to improve the academic performance, organizational/study skills, self-esteem and positively impact the lives of countless students. He said that the foundation of Tutor Doctor is that “everyone can learn, given the right structure and motivation.”

Warshawsky became aware of his passion for helping students a few years ago, as an alumnus volunteer representing Binghamton University. He began advising high school students about college selection and application preparation at college fairs throughout Long Island. When he heard about Tutor Doctor, he was immediately attracted to the concept because he had experienced first-hand the positive, dynamic results of one-on-one learning in building confidence and improving study skills and grades during his own early school years.

Warshawsky earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Binghamton University and an MBA in finance from New York University.

He believes that the tutoring market is forever evolving due to increasing competition in schools and society at large. While historically, tutoring existed to help struggling students to improve academic performance, Warshawsky said that today, Tutor Doctor helps many students that are already excelling in the classroom to maintain their excellence.

Warshawsky’s hours of operation are Monday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tutor Doctor of Nassau County and The Vincent Smith School of Port Washington have recently partnered to launch a new SAT prep program specifically for students with learning disabilities. The first class is scheduled to begin in early September to prepare for the November 2013 exam.
