Readers Write: Manorhaven group seeks input on waterfront plan

The Island Now

n case anyone was wondering, the Manorhaven Action Committee is alive and well, continuing to keep a watchful eye on the Village of Manorhaven.

Now that both the Nassau County Planning Commission and the state Department of State have signed off on it, the clock is ticking on the village’s six-month waterfront building moratorium.

MAC will be focusing on the creation of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program to update a responsible, comprehensive master zoning plan for the future.

Vowing to “follow the money and protect the waterfront”, the MAC Steering Committee has announced that their next meeting will take place Wednesday, Aug. 17 to gain resident suggestions on the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, as well as other ongoing village issues including: over-crowding, progress on Morgan’s Dock and emergency planning for future hurricanes, when storm surges may flood the causeway at Manhasset Boulevard.

Meanwhile, to demonstrate their appreciation for the hard work by the roster of candidates endorsed by MAC in the recent village election, the MAC Steering Committee hosted a gala dinner party and strategy session.

They thanked Gary Pagano, Barbara Ruemenapp and Ken Kraft in a private dockside party room at Marco’s Waterside Grill at the Brewer Capri Marina on Orchard Beach Boulevard, on Thursday, July 7, the day after newly elected Trustee Ken Kraft was sworn in at Village Hall.

Joined by more than two dozen supporters, friends and family, the MAC Steering Committee acknowledged all their campaign workers who had gathered signatures, handed out literature and sat as poll watchers on Election Day.

Under the supervision of restaurant owner Marco Minuto of Garden City and party planner Denise Cross of Carle Place, the guests feasted on a delicious buffet of salads, pastas, grilled chicken, roasted sausages, fruit and cookies.

They toasted old friends and shared funny anecdotes, all while watching the sun set on the beautiful harbor, which makes this waterfront community so special.

Over the past 10 months, MAC residents have submitted more than a dozen quality of life suggestions for adoption by the village government, including detailed proposals for code enforcement, rental inspections, snow removal, parking, traffic and infrastructure improvements — while repeatedly calling for enhanced public safety patrols at the dog park nature preserve to protect the residents from vandalism, garbage and the depredations of drinking, drugs and derelicts who hang out there.

The greatest proof that MAC is an ongoing force in the village are the passage of the waterfront building moratorium and the election of Ken Kraft as village trustee.
