Reader’s Write: Many reasons for outrage on LI

The Island Now

Everyone’s talking about the racist comments made by the owner of the LA Clippers basketball team.  While condemning racism is important, aren’t there some equally important things we should be outraged by?

Shouldn’t we be outraged that in the NY Metro/Long Island area there are 50,000 people living in homeless shelters?

Shouldn’t we be outraged that of these 50,000, more than 20,000 are children?

Shouldn’t we be outraged that 20% of the population in NYC is living below the poverty line?

Shouldn’t we be outraged that many seniors have to choose between paying their heating bills and buying food?

Shouldn’t we be outraged that more than one veteran a day commits suicide?

The real outrage is that we’re not addressing these problems.  We don’t lack the means to improve these things, we lack the will.
