Readers Write: Martins views on bill distorted

The Island Now

Ruth Shalom of Great Neck continues the obfuscation of the abortion debate when she accuses Sen. Martins of attempting to limit and remove “a woman’s rights”. (Martins Opposes Choice For Women – News Times, June 13.)

Reporter Bill San Antonio was more accurate in his reporting of the Martins-Haber disagreement on the Women’s Equality Act.

Haber distorts Martins’ concerns about the taking of human life by non-doctors and the expansion of late-term and partial birth abortions.

Does Haber believe men have a right to take human life while women are denied that right? Does he believe women babies are spared the butchering inflicted on male babies? What equal rights are we talking about?

San Antonio was clear…. Martins and Haber disagree on the Women’s Equality Act only on the matter of expanding abortions deemed legal and on the quality of medical care available to aborting mothers.

Women would do well to recall that the belief that all human life is precious and needs to be protected has served American women well.

Recent articles about rapes and hangings in India as well as violent treatment of women by radical Islamists should make this clear.

Yes, women in this country deserve credit for fighting for equal pay and equal opportunities.

But, they should recognize the advantage of fight ling for equal rights in a society that believes all human life is sacred and worthy of protection.
