Reader’s Write: McCarthy should focus on protecting our borders

The Island Now

I wish Rep. Carolyn McCarthy well on her new endeavors, in addition wishing her well in her recovery and especially thank her for her service to our country and the 4th Congressional District.

There is some unfinished business that Rep. McCarthy can bring to a close before she leaves office.

The first one is supporting the House Resolution H.R. 997 English Language Unity Act of 2013. It would make English the official language of the United States.

Recently the House of Representatives brought up “Immigration Standards.” Absent from these standards is any serious discussion of English language assimilation provisions or making English the official language of the federal government.

I would welcome Rep. McCarthy to tell Speaker Boehner to include official English in his “Immigration Standards”

Also Rep. McCarthy could protect American workers by not rubber-stamping amnesty through Congress.

In many areas her voting record is in stark contrast for what Americans want done about illegal immigration by her recent support of H.R.15.

The “border security” provisions of H.R.15 would weaken current border security by merely requiring a plan to gain operational control of only the southern borders within five years.

In Gallup’s most recent poll, 43 percent said they want to see border security come first.

Even higher numbers come in from the NumbersUSA poll. That poll found 59 percent said they want to see all border and interior enforcement in place before Congress grants any work permits to illegal immigrants. (Week of Feb11-12 2014) and overall Americans want legal immigration cut in half.

It is time for any candidate for this office to seriously consider working for these values to rejuvenate our station in the House of Representatives and direction of our immigration laws.
