Readers Write: Nachmanoff seeking to raise pay of commishes

The Island Now

Great Neck Park District residents and taxpayers should be outraged by the latest adventurism of 2014 Chairman Daniel Nachmanoff: he’s proposed to boost the pay for himself and his two colleagues 25 percent to $25,000 a year in the 2015 budget.

 Why? What’s the justification?

This latest proposal follows the earlier plans to raze Park District headquarters at 5 Beach Road and replace it with a $1.25 million Taj Mahal, rather than consolidate the administrators who work there with the superintendent and recreation supervisors at Parkwood Athletic Center, which already houses their offices as well as the pool, ice rink and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Local taxpayers needn’t have to pay the higher salaries, especially as the commissioners are all retired professionals, two of them 80, who repeatedly express their commitment to community service. By contrast, the five school board trustees, who administer a budget more than 10 times that of the park district, have never received a penny in compensation.
