Reader’s Write: New tax levy ‘an accomplishment’

The Island Now

For almost 10 years, MPSA has worked to enact tax cap legislation and continues to work for its proper implementation. We remain committed to the law which enforces fiscal restraints on New York school districts.

Although the Manhasset School district has submitted a 1.97 percent tax levy increase instead of the .15 percent allowable tax cap increase, we consider it an accomplishment.

The board initially proposed a tax levy of 8 percent which was eventually reduced to 1.97 percent.

Furthermore, the superintendent has assured us that he is committed to the tax cap moving forward.

More importantly, it is a victory for an entire community. People are listening to each other.  Those who were excluded from a place at the table now have a place and a voice.

The budget requires a 60 percent vote to pass and a 40 percent vote to fail.

MPSA urges all residents to exercise their voice on June 18. Vote.
