Readers Write: Obama did right in backing gay rights

The Island Now

This Fourth of July (How about that?)

This week is the time to declare my independence. The time to examine the worthwhile principles and values our country represents:

To stand free of all the on-going confusion around me: To remember the rights in their true light with which our creator has endowed us.

When a candidate runs for office, all those with special interests inspect the candidate to see if he or she is bent in their direction.

Here is an example of how it should be: A good candidate will set aside his or her leanings and properly serve all of the people.

In the case of President Obama, he was against so-called same-sex marriage so long as a majority of the people were against it.

Upon receiving credible news that the scales had tipped and that a majority were now in favor of it or at least of its legalization, he gave the directive to proclaim that he was for it.

What he did is correct even though for all we know he might as much as consider it disgusting.

That is not important. He is doing his duty for the people as best it can be done and setting aside personal convictions whatever they are.

Again, it is important to keep separation of church and state. Also, morality and state.

These are not concerns of government which could never function if mired down as a result of their effects. We all as humans have free will. If some as a result should chose hades, it will be between they, themselves and our creator et al. However that works out. Each is free to chose. There are so many human beings that have very close meaningful relationships where it never ever slips below the belt. I am not going to pass any judgment.

As is said: Judge not that ye be judged. Government has to do the same. Government’s role is to make laws and systems and the like.

If one or more individuals qualify, eligibility for a government program is granted.

There are many misnomers flying around such as ‘same sex.’ Same gender not to mention the ‘h’ word is more accurate. They just do not provide the insulatory comfort.

Sex is when a man does …, etc. and a woman willfully accepts and does …, etc. Nothing else is sex.

Things are what they are and not what they might be named or called. If the woman does not willfully accept, it is rape.

Marriage is a word with various usages. Matrimony is narrower and there is also wedlock. Check your dictionary.

Government is concerned with the legal aspects of civil union. Remember, keep moral issues out of government.

Another situation which has to be dealt with is ‘government for sale.’ If someone gives a cop ten bucks so as not to get a ticket, that  is bribery. If someone gives an elected official a million bucks (it is for sure it is not neutral), that is lobbying.

They are both one and the same.

As it stands, those in any other country can say “they are definitely no better than we are.” Is that (the new) equality?

Regarding the above, some things are yet to be resolved. Is it Mr. and Mr. or Mrs. and Mrs. so and so and do they keep their maiden name.

What about the family name? Is it Tomdick, Dickharry, Maryjane or Janemary?

Still, on this Fourth of July I may think freely, speak freely, act freely and I won’t intentionally jump the curb and hurt anyone or their body.

Free, free, free and scot-free if need be.
