Readers Write: Parochial schools deserve state’s support

The Island Now

Our state legislators in Albany have failed to pass the Education Investment Tax Credit bill. Which I find most troubling indeed.

Parents are looking to provide a better education for their children and this bill would of have helped them in doing as such.

Catholic schools, and other private faith based schools produce students strongly dedicated to their faith, families, and communities by providing an intellectually stimulating environment rich in spirituality, character and moral development. Now according to statistics the graduation rate is 98 percent of students end up finishing high school and 95 percent go on to college.

This bill would not cost the state a penny and there would not be a violation of church and state.

Donors would be encouraged to donate to a scholarship fund to private schools or to public schools and by do so would receive a tax credit on their return for their contribution.

That would be a slam dunk. Cardinal Dolan has just said on this very issue that the state has abandoned these children and I quote,” Yet they stayed up all night in Albany talking about marijuana- but not a word about supporting our kids by finally passing the EITC.”

It is a sad day indeed when a drug is more important than the educational welfare of our children in this great state of New York is concerned.
