A Garden City Park man was arrested Monday and charged breaking into Uncle Bacala’s, an Italian seafood restaurant on Jericho Turnpike, after he was struck by a motorist while fleeing, the Nassau County Police Department said.

Detectives said Julio Cesar Alfaro, 21, was accidentally struck by a passing motorist on Jericho Turnpike after breaking into the restaurant.

Alfaro, who continued to flee after he was struck, was located after the driver notified nearby officers of the incident, police said. The officers, who were unaware at the time of a connection to the break in, transferred Alfaro to an area hospital for treatment of a head injury, according to police.

Police said a subsequent investigation into the break in and auto accident led detectives to arrest Alfaro at the hospital, and he was placed into custody after being medically released.

According to police, Alfaro pulled open the storm door at Uncle Bacala’s shortly after midnight Monday and then forced open the double French doors, damaging them.

The police said the proceeds of the burglary were undetermined at the time.

Alfaro is charged with burglary in the third degree and criminal mischief in the second degree.
