Dr. Barbaro Podiatrist /Parker Jewish Institute Rays 4, SAI Insurance Pirates 3.

In a real pitchers’ duel, the Dr. Barbaro Podiatrist & Parker Jewish Institute Rays outlasted the SAI Insurance Pirates in real nail biter. Marco Gullo was the starter for the Rays and pitched three outstanding scoreless innings. Josh Henderson again supplied much of the Ray offense, going 3-for-3. Also contributing big was Scott McClellan, who went 2-for-3 and scored one run, and James Prado, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Luke Notine went 1-for-2 in limited play and Anthony Agerneza reached base twice, including a double and two big RBIs.

The defensive play of the game, and maybe the year, was pulled off by the Pirates’ Jimmy Weedon playing third base. The Rays’ James Prado crushed a low line drive to Jimmy’s left. Jimmy dove all out with full extension and snared the ball in the air before it went by him. A real ESPN Top 10 play! Josh Henderson also made an outstanding play in center field tracking down a well-hit liner for the third out of the inning with a runner on base, saving the Rays.

Though not feeling his best, Vinay Patel came in for the save, pitching three great innings while helping out on offense, going 1-for-2 with a single. Arjun Bhatt went 2-for-3 and played a sparkling defense at second base. Sanketh Kumar and Alex Isopo both reached base in one of their two at bats and played great defense. Christian Flynn and William Vasilakos each helped out big on defense and had great at bats for the Rays.

Stutzmann Funeral Home/Tudor Advisory Group Giants 11,  SAI Insurance Pirates 9.

The teams combined for 16 hits, including eight extra base hits.  Ryan Wasserman pulled double duty, leading the Giants on both offense and defense in the win.  Ryan racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Giants. He singled in the second inning, doubled in the fourth inning and homered in the fifth inning. The Pirates’ lineup had no answer for Ryan, who held the Pirates hitless over one inning, allowing no earned runs, walking none and striking out three.  The Giants would not relinquish the lead, as the Pirates were unable to weather a seven-run second inning deficit. The Pirates scored on an RBI triple by Spagnoli, an error and a wild pitch in the second inning, an RBI double by Kunak and an RBI triple by Kareff in the third inning, an RBI single by Kunak and an RBI double by Asmus in the fifth inning. Still, the Pirates couldn’t catch the Giants.  Christopher Chin got the win for the Giants, allowing three runs over two innings, striking out four, walking none and surrendering one hit.

The Giants never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring three runs on a two-run single by Joseph Chimenti.  The Giants added four more runs in the top of the second. The Giants piled on three more runs in the top of the fifth.  A clutch ground out scored Michael Paladino to open the scoring in the frame, followed up by Ryan ‘s two-run blast, bringing home Duhan Lee. Duhan also pitched three great innings, bridging the gap to the closer.  Garrett Roth had a great game, catching four innings and making the play of the game at third base.

Long Island Orthodontics Dr. Zadnik Merillon Ducks 10, The Modells/Evolution Realty Merillon River Sharks 4.

On a beautiful night for baseball, the River Sharks drew first blood by plating the first four batters of the game.  After nearly becoming shark bait, the Ducks migrated back to their pond and took matters into their own bills. A mighty effort saw the Ducks score at least one run in every inning played.

Adrian Balkcom reached base twice, including a single, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Adrian also caught the entire game and hooked one Shark trying to steal second base. Abidin Dauti reached base all three times, including a double that drove in the Ducks’ first run. Abidin also snagged a fly ball in center field, while Martin Lev went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, including the game winner. Marty has hit the ball with authority over the past few games.

Jared Puntus also went 2-for-3 including a solo blast that tied the game in the fourth inning. Adam Miller continued his clutch hitting, going 2-for-2 with a single and a two-run home run that proved to drive in the game-winning run. Brian Kornreich reached base in both at-bats, including a single, a stolen base and a run scored. Mike Castelli was perfect in two plate appearances, including a single. Ibrahim Khwaja and Ian Tsao battled mightily during their at bats.

Ibrahim was the defensive star for the Ducks with sparkling plays at shortstop and second base. Justin Tamara doubled and scored a run in two at bats. Justin also came on in relief in the fourth inning and pitched scoreless baseball, striking out one to close out the game. Chris Bruccoleri executed a perfect suicide squeeze to bring home the Ducks’ seventh run. Chris was solid in the field as well.  Mike Jacobs had two solid at-bats before unleashing his first career home run. Mike’s three-run blast put the game out of reach for good. A.J. De Vito drove in a run and reached base twice.  After getting his feathers ruffled in the first inning, A.J. settled down to strike out five in three plus innings to earn his first win of the season.
