The Island Now

Every year Alper’s True Value Hardware, located at the corner of Main Street and Irma Avenue in Port Washington hosts a street fair/BBQ festival to raise money for the Community Chest of Port Washington, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to distribute funds to charities dedicated to improving the Port Washington community for all residents.

This year’s event — the ninth annual — held on May 21st was the biggest yet; estimates are at 1,300 festival-goers.

An event of this size takes time and effort, organizational skill and the dedication to see it through.

Adam Novick, a fifth generation Alper handles a myriad of logistical details to ensure that this delicious, fun and successful event goes off without a hitch.

The Alpers True Value Hardware owners believe that local businesses can and should be a part of helping Port Washington charities and, when it created Karmacue (in 2009) wanted to host an event that led the way for other businesses in town to “step up” in the same way.

Alpers chose the Community Chest as the beneficiary of the proceeds because of its broad reach (25+ charities that provide a wide range of social, educational and recreational needs) and grassroots approach.

The event name — Karmacue — was coined by Adam Novick to mean “a rewarded state of happiness achieved while eating great BBQ for a great cause.”

One hundred percent of the event proceeds is donated to the Community Chest of Port Washington and in the last nine years, Karmacue has raised over $45,000 to help Port Washington residents.

Alper’s Hardware is an institution in our town; a family business serving the residents of Port since 1911.

They are committed to helping their hometown community and Karmacue exemplifies their resolve.

The Community Chest of Port Washington officers, directors and staff say, “Thank You” with all our hearts to Adam Novick and the entire Alper’s family for their dedication to well-being of Port Washington and its residents.
